Discover Our Literacy Journey

This section features powerful images capturing the impact of our literacy programs among Ugandan youth.

Why Literacy?

Literacy is the cornerstone on which learning,
communication and innovation are built. It has the
ability to help unlock potential and bring dreams to life.
At the ToroBelle Literacy Foundation, we believe in
literacy as the foundation of lifelong learning and
education. People who cannot read or write,
experience difficulties with simple everyday tasks such
as reading the label of a medicine bottle, filling in a job
application or understanding a traffic sign. When we
help someone to acquire literacy skills, we are
empowering them with access to better opportunities
in life to break the cycle and the obstacles caused by
lack of literacy.
Reading Opens Doors – that is, doors to future
opportunities and choices. Our purpose is to invest in
remote communities in Uganda to provide the tools
and resources they request to shape the direction of
their children’s literacy future.

Global Statistics

According to research by UNICEF (2020), literacy rates
have shown a positive trend in recent years, and most
of that progress is due to the increase in educational
opportunities and literacy programs around the world.
But despite the positive results of recent efforts, there
are still 115 million youth, age 15 to 24, that remain
illiterate and unable to access education. Literacy rates
still remain the lowest in underdeveloped countries and
Uganda is one of them, around the globe, females
continue to account for a majority of the total illiterate
youth population.

750 Million People in the World are Illiterate.

750 million adults – two-thirds of whom are women,
still lack basic reading and writing skills.

About 258 million children and youth are out of
school.

6 out of 10 children and adolescents combined are not
learning the minimum in reading and math.

People with poor literacy skills are more than 2 times
likely to be unemployed.
