Empowering Youth Through Literacy and Learning

The ToroBelle Literacy Foundation envisions a thriving Uganda where every person possesses the literacy skills necessary to reach his or her full potential in life and that the cycle of low literacy and poverty among families comes to an end. Below are highlights of our programs.

Empowering Futures Through Literacy

Explore how our programs nurture a lifelong love for reading and learning.

Read Aloud

This Program event provides members an opportunity to interact with Scholars and spread awareness of the benefits of reading aloud. Members take turns in visiting Junior Institutions of learning and participating in reading aloud for the scholars as well as engaging the scholars in reading aloud.

Early exposure to literature allows children to be the strong readers, thinkers, writers, and speakers of the future.

Write a Book

This Program aims at developing a skill and encouraging a culture of imaginative and creative writing. Scholars are encouraged and guided on how to structure different chapters on a given topic that culminate into a book.

Essay Competition

Contestants are encouraged to write essays on given topics and the best essay is awarded and published.

Spelling Bee

A competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad range of words with varying degrees of difficulty. Contestants need to practice and memorize words and recite them as written in the dictionary. The purpose of this is to broaden and enrich the vocabulary of the scholars.

Book Club

A list of preferred books to read is provided by the foundation to scholars in different schools. A book is then chosen for read and review within the book club. A weekly club meeting is then scheduled to review chapters read by the scholars in a discussion and different views are sought on the interpretation of the text.

My Library

Scholars are encouraged to start a home library by requesting the foundation to help them start one.  This aims to improve the scholars reading culture and ultimately their literacy level.

School Library

Scholars select books they’d like to read, from a book catalog, the foundation through the partners provides the books to the School library and students are allowed to borrow the books and read them at home. In addition the foundation donates a computer to a school and installs E-Books and Audio Books to make them easily accessible for students. The Foundation has created a digital library with FREE resources to keep children reading while at home..

Debate

Annual Interschool Debate Event held in different regions bringing together schools from these regions to debate various topics of interest affecting their society.

Mentorship

A program that brings together various professionals from diverse walks of life who dedicate time to mentoring and Coaching scholars. The students are paired with mentors to provide guidance to the mentee to support and hold accountable the mentee on a journey to achieving a particular aspiration or addressing a weakness.

Career Guidance

A program that involves guiding Scholars to help them acquire the knowledge, information, skills, and experience necessary to identify the available career options, and accomplish their career objectives. The program includes a Career Guidance engagement between a scholar and Guidance counselors or industry professionals, and culminates into an annual Career fair.

Scholarships

Scholars pursing literature who perform exceptionally are awarded a study grant to contribute towards their tuition.

Coding Courses

During Holidays, the foundation will organize short courses in coding and ICT skills to equip students with hands on skills as a foundation for innovation. These will be tailored to both primary and High school students. The Pilot is in Fort Portal Secondary School which has a fully equipped Computer lab of 100 Computers.

Hackathons

Every year, there will be an annual Hackathon and exhibition of the innovations from the students and prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners. Mentors will be provided and pitch sessions will be organized so as to develop the students’ skills in pitching and growing/ refining their innovation to becoming a solution that solves a challenge and transforms a sector or community.
